swarm.space is a commercial company providing low-bandwidth satellite connectivity using ultra-small (quarter cubesat unit) satellites in a low orbit. Swarm satellites cover every point on Earth, enabling IoT devices to affordably operate in any location. Swarm uses a form of LoRa network.

While ground terminals for satellite networks traditionally were both big and expensive, modems and antennas for LoRa networks such as Swarm have now reached credit card size. Think of it as “Arduino boards with satellite connections”.

Concrete project on this platform include

  • Building sensor nodes for agricultural and maritime applications, using satellite connections
  • Designing (solar) power systems for satellite sensor nodes

  • well suited for a bachelor project, and with focus on

  • Hardware

  • Networks

  • Maker technologies

  • Solar energy
