Jorge Quiané was an Associate Professor in the Computer Science Department at the IT University of Copenhagen (ITU). He unexpectedly passed away in May of 2023.

His research focus was on the broad areas of (i) big data management, (ii) cross-platform data processing, and (iii) scalable data infrastructures. He received his Ph.D. in computer science from INRIA (Nantes University), France in 2008.

Jorge was a system-oriented computer scientist with a background in data management. He has published numerous research papers on data management and novel system architectures. He has lead and managed the Rheem project, which is now in the incubation process of the Apache foundation as Apache Wayang. He has been honoured with the 2022 ACM SIGMOD Research Highlight Award, the Best Demo Award at ICDE 2022, and the Best Paper Award at ICDE 2021 for his works on big data processing. He holds five patents in core database areas and in machine learning.
