Konstantinos Kloudas from Snowflake Berlin will give a talk as part of the Advanced Data Systems course on December 2.
Snowflake’s journey from Batch to Streaming Abstract: In this talk we will see how Snowflake evolved from a classic batch processor, where the whole input dataset is stored on disk waiting to be processed, to a stream processor where data can be processed as it comes. In addition, we will see how it did this without breaking the “single-product” principle where everything is exposed as classic Tables and users do not need to learn a new paradigm to leverage its new capabilities.

Vasiliki Kalavri will visit the DASYA research group and give a talk in the Advanced Data Systems class on September 12.
Cryptographically secure analytics in the Cloud Abstract: Enabling secure outsourced analytics with practical performance has been a long-standing research challenge in the data management and systems communities. In this talk, I will present recent work that allows multiple data holders to contribute their data towards a joint analysis in the cloud, while keeping the data siloed even from the cloud providers.

Paper presented at DaMoN 2023
DaMoN Niclas presented our paper surveying the eBPF ecosystem and introducing Delilah, the first publicly described computational storage device supporting eBPF-based code offload. The paper was presented at the DaMoN Workshop, held in conjunction with SIGMOD/PODS 2023 in Seattle, US.
Abstract The idea of pushing computation to storage devices has been explored for decades, without widespread adoption so far. The definition of Computational Programs namespaces in NVMe (TP 4091) might be a breakthrough.

Paper presented at ADMS 2020
ADMS Niclas presented our paper on the practical security of hash-based authentication with modern hardware architecture. The paper concludes that passwords only adhering to the minimum requirements of major websites are easily crackable with home hardware. The paper was presented at ADMS 2020, which was the 11th edition of the workshop. It was held online for the first time due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Re-imagined Architectures: Towards more Efficient Data-Intensive Systems
Abstract Today’s datacenters host data processing and data management systems that routinely span hundreds of computers. At such scale, data movement and coordination is becoming a bottleneck at various levels, limiting further scalability. One way of reducing data movement bottlenecks is by pushing parts of the computation closer to the data source and, thanks to the changing hardware landscape, this can be done using emerging specialized hardware in an efficient manner.

Paper presented at CIDR 2020
CIDR Philippe presented our paper looking back at Open-Channel SSDs, their impact on the storage industry and the lessons we learned in the OX project. The paper was presented at the CIDR Conference, held for the first time in Amsterdam.
Abstract Open-Channel SSDs are storage devices that let hosts takefull control over data placement and I/O scheduling. In recent years, they have gained acceptance in data centers (e.
