ML × Operations Research for Urban Logistics

We’re hiring a Research Scientist at IT-Universitetet i København on a project at the intersection of machine learning and operations research, funded by the European innovation community EIT Urban Mobility.
Cities across Europe are decarbonising freight - replacing diesel vans with mixed fleets of electric vehicles, cargo bikes, and light electric vehicles. This transition has enormous climate potential, but introduces optimization challenges that existing tools and benchmarks don’t capture. The goal of this project is to build an open benchmark for mixed-fleet vehicle routing grounded in real operational data from European cities, bridging the gap between academic VRP research and the reality of sustainable urban logistics.

Konstantinos Kloudas from Snowflake Berlin will give a talk as part of the Advanced Data Systems course on December 2.
Snowflake’s journey from Batch to Streaming Abstract: In this talk we will see how Snowflake evolved from a classic batch processor, where the whole input dataset is stored on disk waiting to be processed, to a stream processor where data can be processed as it comes. In addition, we will see how it did this without breaking the “single-product” principle where everything is exposed as classic Tables and users do not need to learn a new paradigm to leverage its new capabilities.

DaMoN Niclas presented our paper surveying the eBPF ecosystem and introducing Delilah, the first publicly described computational storage device supporting eBPF-based code offload. The paper was presented at the DaMoN Workshop, held in conjunction with SIGMOD/PODS 2023 in Seattle, US.
Abstract The idea of pushing computation to storage devices has been explored for decades, without widespread adoption so far. The definition of Computational Programs namespaces in NVMe (TP 4091) might be a breakthrough.

DASYA part of DAPHNE project The DAPHNE project focuses on Integrated Data Analysis Pipelines for Large-Scale Data Management, HPC and Machine Learning. It aims to define and build an open and extensible system infrastructure for integrated data analysis pipelines, including data management and processing, high-performance computing (HPC), and machine learning (ML) training and scoring. Key observations are that (1) systems of these areas share many compilation and runtime techniques, (2) there is a trend towards complex data analysis pipelines that combine these systems, and (3) the used, increasingly heterogeneous, hardware infrastructure converges as well.

SIGMOD Reproducibility efforts honored with ACM SIGMOD Contribution Award
The SIGMOD 2020 Contributions Award recognizes the innovative work in the data management community to encourage scientific reproducibility of our publications. Reproducibility was introduced at the 2008 SIGMOD Conference and since then has influenced how the community approaches experimental evaluation. It has also influenced similar efforts within ACM. The Contributions Award recognizes this effort in the person of the colleagues who led this effort within SIGMOD (in alphabetical order): Philippe Bonnet, Juliana Freire, Stratos Idreos, Stefan Manegold, Ioana Manolescu, and Dennis Shasha.

Re-imagined Architectures: Towards more Efficient Data-Intensive Systems
Abstract Today’s datacenters host data processing and data management systems that routinely span hundreds of computers. At such scale, data movement and coordination is becoming a bottleneck at various levels, limiting further scalability. One way of reducing data movement bottlenecks is by pushing parts of the computation closer to the data source and, thanks to the changing hardware landscape, this can be done using emerging specialized hardware in an efficient manner.

Interval Joins: Evaluation - Parallelization - Aggregation The interval join is a basic operation that finds application in temporal, spatial, and uncertain databases. Given a 1D discrete or continuous space, an interval i = [start, end] is defined by a start and an end point in this space. The interval join of inputs R, S identifies all pairs of intervals r in R, s in S that intersect, i.

BLEva is open-sourced and can be retrieved on GitHub.
Abstract Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) is the short-range, single-hop protocol of choice for the edge of the IoT. Despite its growing significance for phone-to-peripheral communication, BLE’s smartphone system performance characteristics are not well understood. As others, we experienced mixed erratic performance results in our BLE based smartphone-centric applications.

Björn Þór Jónsson is presenting a paper at the SISAP conference (http://www.sisap.org/2017/) in München.
The traditional role of nearest-neighbor classification in music classification research is that of a straw man opponent for the learning approach of the hour. Recent work in high-dimensional indexing has shown that approximate nearest-neighbor algorithms are extremely scalable, yielding results of reasonable quality from billions of high- dimensional features.

Each Copernicus satellite produces 1.5 petabytes of raw data annually, holding an enormous potential for increasing the understanding of our planet. Since dissecting the data takes skills within software development and data analysis, ITU and the Danish Agency for Science and Higher Education have formed a new collaboration.
